Whiskey sours got a bad rap for a while there, all because of the sour mix. There are favorite restaurants that I will not order this because they use crappy sour mix.

So I set out to make the perfect whiskey sour myself! And guess what? It wasn’t that hard.
We are not talking about the crafty sour when you add the egg white to make it frothy. No no no, not today.

First thing you need is a good bourbon. I like Knob Creek and I will also do Woodford Reserve if I need to.

Then you need a good sour mix. I will also show you how to make a sour mix but this is a good standby.

Oh! You should also have fruit, aka an orange slice and cherry! I was so excited when Costco had these cherries in store! Sure, you can use the little jar of maraschino cherries but if you start crafting cocktails, you are going to want to up your game and use these!
And of course, we must discuss the glassware. A nice heavy bottom rocks glass is nice for this cocktail.
Let’s get mixing!
1 oz bourbon
2 oz sour mix
OR
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Orange wheel (or half)
Cherry or two
Add those 2 items to your metal shaker filled with ice and shake it like you mean it. A good 20 to 30 seconds is recommended.
Skewer the orange and cherry on a pick.
Fill a nice heavy bottomed rocks glass with ice and strain the Whiskey Sour in the glass (you can use the ice in the shaker if desired, it’s just called “dirty ice” at that point)
Garnish that drink with the fruit pick, take a sip, and remember, give me a toast!
Enjoy (and drink responsibly!)
